Diploma in Music Education (DME)

This is a course of training for teachers who wish to work free-lance or at music schools teaching instrumental courses, singing, rhythmics or elementary music teaching (German abbreviation: EMP). These courses are offered in cooperation with the Hamburg College of Music an Theatre (Hochschule für Musik und Theater).

In addition to the major subject its methodology is a further main subject. Piano is an obligatory subsidiary subject (except where the major subject is a keyboard or plucked instrument, or rhythmics).

For elementary music teaching (EMP) respectively rhythmics main subject is the corresponding music teaching complex as well as all subjects indicated in the schedule of the respective course specialization. The special subject EMP requires an accompanying subject (instrumental, singing). Piano is an obligatory subsidiary subject unless a keyboard or plucked instument is chosen as an accompanying subject.

Prescribed period of study

8 semesters

First part: 6 semesters ending with final pre-examination
Second part: 2 semesters ending with final examination

Final examination

The examination contains the following parts:

1. dissertation (submitted for diploma)
2. artistic and practical examination
3. performing sight reading and if necessary orchestral passages (except for rhythmics and singing)
4. two demonstration lessons
5. didactic and methodical examination

After a successful final examination a certificate will be issued containing the results of all examinations as well as the final mark of the pre-examination. Moreover the student will receive an officially approved diploma certifying the diploma’s academical degree.
